artist statement.
A few decades spent creating editorial illustrations left me burnt out and yearning to make art that once again excited me. The pandemic, while daunting, gave me time to reconnect with the type of art that always inspired me - abstract painting.
As a Type “A” control freak, my illustrations were structured and precise, but transitioning to abstract painting forced me into a space of unpredictability and playfulness. While I maintain control over many aspects of my work, the surprises that emerge with oil and cold wax keep the process exhilarating and challenging.
My work captures a balance between structure and spontaneity, embracing the grungy and unpredictable. By building grungy, textural layers and working back into them with tools and solvents, I’ve found the freedom to explore and grow as an artist. Though remnants of my illustrative past appear through sharp lines and collage, it’s the push and pull of creating in oil and cold wax that drives me to witness what emerges by the final layer.
